Welcome!

Warmest greetings to all Fudanshis, Fujoshis, visiting, stumbling, passing through this web blog.

Fair warning to individuals who are not LGBT-friendly, this site contains some Rated R(estricted) material,i.e., implicit or explicit Boy x Boy content.

The idea for this blog started upon viewing countless Asian Boys' Love Dramas and Movies and I was thinking: "What if I don't have to spend time watching all these wonderful, and sometimes regrettable pieces of work, if someone could just run it down for me, before I started delving into them? Wouldn't that be great?"

I also imagined that the characters were thinking aloud, or they could be making running commentaries on the state of things, and sometimes talking to us, the audience. If they were speaking in English and pressed for time, what would they have said. If I were playing these lovely, sometimes unsavory characters, what would I have said, how the conversations would have taken place.  So please take this blog as a whimsical journey to the land of Yaoi and Shounen Ai.

Navigating the Blog

To make the scope of this blog more compact, the focus is on Asian BL Dramas and Movies only that are live-action. Anime/Manga/Novels and the like are not included. This blog will feature only the 5 countries listed on the header (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand). Dramas and movies from other Asian countries not listed under its separate tab will be under "Others." Please note that, because life happens, I am not able to venture a lot into this "Other" segment.

The "Top" Segment will list my favorites, but not necessarily the best, of dramas and movies, and other categories. After all, this is purely subjective and what I like, you may not like and vice versa. So we just have to agree to disagree.

The "Bottom" Segment will list those dramas, and movies, and other categories, which I felt were a waste of time that I unfortunately cannot get back. Hopefully, this will spare you from the same torture, unless you are brave enough or bored enough to tackle them.

The "Q & A" Section will address some questions regarding the decision-making process of why some titles are included, while others are not, and other concerns you may have along the way.

The "Tips & Tricks" Tab contains general advice on how to make your BL Viewing experience better, and other afterthoughts.

Blog Posts

Content of the main blog posts may vary. It could be a review of a particular drama/movie, while exploring its underlying themes. They also may contain commentary on social, political, or other types of issues relating to Asian BL. Please keep in mind that all views in this blog are of the author's and are purely subjective.

Blog Format

Dramas and movies listed will be in Alphabetical order, and not by Year, although the Year will be shown along with the title. Media format will also be indicated to differentiate among several forms of the same title.

All titles will be in English rather than in their native language, unless there is no official translation or the English title is less known or obscure. The secondary title, if available, will appear alongside the primary title in which the work is known. If a title is part of a series, then discretion is made to list the work as part of the series or as a stand-alone title. More on this criteria in the
Q & A section.

All titles on this site are obvious BL selections, contain explicit BL themes,  unless otherwise noted with *BL nuance* or *implied BL* under the title, followed by a brief descriptor of reason for inclusion.  More on this criteria in the "Q & A" section.

Links to corresponding Dramalist entries will also be included, to direct you to more details (such as the REAL summary/plot, cast, runtime, etc.), which will not be repeated on this site.  In the absence of Dramalist entries, AsianWiki or IMDB links will be used.

Final Word of Caution

This site contains satire, spoilers, sex and swear words. Mature (18+) content such as images will be hidden unless "Click to Show" button is pressed. Please read this site's Terms & Conditions before proceeding.

Bromancing the Brother

Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin in Addicted
Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin in "Addicted"
One of the most common theme in the BL universe, is that of the Sibling Trope, or in this case, Brother trope: adopted brothers, step brothers, falling in love with each other despite some misgivings. We see that in "Addicted," "Boundary Crossing," "Uncontrolled Love" to name a few. Heck, even  titles abound with similar names for the lack of creativity: "My Bromance" (Thai BL), which is different from "Bromance" (Chinese Non-BL), "The Brother" (Chinese BL), "My Brother" (Vietnamese BL).

What makes this particular trope so popular? Is it the taboo aspect that intrigues many of us, like a "forbidden love story" of sorts? Same-sex love is still frowned upon in reserved and traditional cultures, and is also considered a taboo by many. So is this like the "Double Whammy" of taboos? Gay brothers, usually not related by blood, thinking, "hey we are screwed anyway, so why not make the most of it?"

True Love or Just Confused: The Quest for Sexual Identity

Club Friday 8
It seemed not so long ago that I watched “True Love or Just Confused,” one of the segments from the long-running Club Friday Series (season 8). This remains to this date, one of my top ten BL series as it has drama, romance, angst, betrayal, without a whole lot of fluff but with a whole lot of dough. My initial annoyance towards Todd, gave way to tolerance; what kept me at the edge of my seat was Meng’s character and his emotional journey.

Meng’s doubts regarding his sexual identity did not start until Todd reappeared in his life after a long hiatus. Todd and Meng reunited at a time when Meng was just starting his relationship with Nuch, who turned out to be a selfish and manipulative girlfriend. Todd’s carefree attitude is a stark contrast to Nuch’s controlling nature. Despite wanting to be with his girlfriend, Meng found that being with Todd was a relief from stress of everyday life and a break from Nuch.

The Ship that Sails: BL Couples: Fan Service or IRL?

Mew x Art in happier times
For those who are not living under a rock probably would have heard about the MewArt saga  (from "What the Duck" series)  that is playing out on social media. I, for one, do not follow or nor am I invested so much in these actors lives outside of the drama, so I am not entirely sure of the details. Long story short, the lines between fan service and real life became blurry when one of the party harbored real feelings (whether just purely sexual or something  more) for his partner and these feelings were not reciprocated. The result is one hairy mess where one calls the other a liar, and another posts a teary-eyed explanation of how it all went down. Whether the drama ensued between Mew and Art was necessary or not, we cannot fathom, or whether their choice of using social media to air their dirty laundry was a wise one. But one thing is certain, I feel that as viewers, we have to keep ourselves in check and realize that those who act in these type of dramas should also have the same courtesy as any entertainer in other genres, which is their private lives. What they do or don't do in their free time, is frankly none of our business. If you do not like others, especially strangers, to dictate what you decide to do in your life, then the same is true for them.

Revive: Rebirth of An Obsession

Revive
I just watched the Chinese drama, "Revive"  recently after it came numerous times on my YouTube "Up Next" playlist. What piqued my interest in the beginning was the premise of the story: the fantastical element of being reborn into another person's body. Of course, I knew that I had to suspend my disbelief in order to watch this drama, because if reincarnation was even possible, then a lot of us would have the chance to right our wrongs, and do the things we intend to do in our past life, and do it in the new life. But not every second chance in life would let us freely do the things without repercussions, because other factors are at play that are beyond our control. You may want to do something without realizing the effect that your actions will make, and it may not turn out as you want them to be.

But I digress. This is about the drama, so I will get to the plot. Primarily, just because the title is "Revive", and is based on a novel, Reincarnation of a Superstar, does not mean reincarnation in the mythical sense. It did not begin as a supernatural or a spiritual transmigration, but  this rebirth is done by a human being using technological resources. We will find that this rebirth is a ploy by a sinister mind, trying to get revenge on his brother who wronged him in the past.  The mastermind, Li Chen , just so happened to be at the crash scene at the very beginning, in order to switch the bodies of Du Fei, and Mu Zi Che. With the resources at hand, he was able to implant Du Fei's brain / thoughts / memories into the latter's body. The logical me is saying "Yeah, right" when this happened, questioning the sheer impossibility of it, but then I remembered, that this is only fiction, and just to go along with it.
